Most garage shelving fails for one of two reasons: it was never rated for the weight put on it, or it was set up in a spot that forced people to stack heavy things high. Both are easy to avoid before you buy.
Start with the load rating, not the price
Load ratings are quoted per shelf, evenly distributed. A unit described as 875kg is usually five shelves at 175kg each — and that figure assumes weight spread across the whole shelf, not a single engine part in the middle. If you plan to store paint, tools and boxed spares, 150kg per shelf is comfortable. For tyres, timber or heavy machinery, look higher and keep the load low down.
Depth matters more than height
A 30cm deep shelf suits tins, boxes and hand tools. 45cm and up starts to swallow storage boxes and power tool cases. Deeper shelves are tempting, but if the unit sits along a wall you walk past, anything over 45cm will catch your shoulder every time.
Boltless vs bolted
- Boltless (slot-together) units assemble by hand in minutes and can be re-configured later — ideal for garages, sheds and utility rooms.
- Bolted steel racking is stiffer under heavy static loads but takes longer to build and is awkward to move once loaded.
- For most home garages, boltless with a solid MDF or steel deck is the sensible middle ground.
Plan the layout before you build
- Heaviest items on the bottom two shelves, seasonal items up top.
- Leave at least 60cm of walking room in front of any unit you use weekly.
- Measure the garage door track and any ceiling storage before choosing unit height.
- If the floor is uneven, sit the feet on a strip of ply rather than shimming one corner.
Get those four right and a mid-priced rack will outlast an expensive one that was set up badly.
